In 1978 California established Title-24, part 6 in response to a legislative mandate to reduce the States energy consumption. The Standards are updated every four years by the California Energy Commission. On January 1, 2014 the new Title-24 2013 Standards will be enforced by all Building Departments.
CalGreen is the first satewide "Green" building code adopted in the United States. Written under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, it became effective in 2011 to improve public health, reduce environmental impact, and encourage sustainable building practices.
